Choosing an educational toy

The best educational toys do not look like lessons. Look for things your kid can use in more than one way: letters that become spelling games, a chalkboard that is a classroom one day and an art studio the next, and STEM toys like science kits that invite questions.

Choose toys that grow with them. Open-ended toys get played with for years, while a toy that does one trick is quickly forgotten. If your kid sits between two age ranges, go lower for confidence or higher for a challenge that lasts.

Most kids' science kits suit ages 5 and up, with simpler grow-and-watch kits for younger children and more involved experiments for ages 8 to 12. Adult supervision is recommended for all of them.
